Covid 19 has made it a difficult year for everyone, but especially school children. They missed out on a lot of education and lots of parents are now looking for a Tutor to help them to catch up or fill in the missing gaps.
But where do you start to look for a Tutor? There are so many of us out there!!! And then of course you have the next decision to make – online tutoring versus face to face tutoring!!
Well – here are some pros and cons of both!
Online Tutoring
Pros
v It’s very Covid 19 friendly – there is no risk of any infections to be caught.
v It’s good for children who get nervous in new situations – they can learn in a familiar environment i.e. their own home.
v It is good for older children who prefer to be on a computer and use ‘technology’ such as webcams, online/interactive whiteboards etc
v It can give more scope for the Tutor e.g. the tutor can upload games, power points, images and worksheets to make the lesson more interesting.
v It saves time because the adult does not have to travel to the tutor’s location.
v You can often be more flexible about times/days.
Cons
v You need to have access to the relevant technology with suitable software, hardware and fast internet.
v It can be distracting for the child – especially if they don’t have their own private space to complete the lessons.
v You aren’t able to play ‘running around’ type games for younger children which could be a difficulty if your child has a short attention span or an additional need such as ADHD.
Face to Face Tutoring
Pros
v It is easier for younger children as the Tutor has lots of resources already in the home and readily available to use for playing games and doing ‘shorter’ faster paced activities to hold their attention.
v It can be more effective as it is more ‘physical’ than just sitting behind a computer screen.
v You can be more motivated as there is the capacity to provide a more varied, active lesson.
v The tutor is able to read your child’s body language easier, which is especially useful for spotting early signs of discomfort or stress.
v It is easier for children with additional needs e.g. autism as you can tailor the lessons and adapt it as you go to meet the needs of your child.
Cons
v It is not as ‘Covid 19’ safe as Online tutoring.
v For some children, it can remind them of the school classroom.
v It takes up more time as you have to include travelling to the tutor’s home.
